Current status of soil erosion by water in Bac Kan province

SUMMARY
The study was carried out basing on the calculation of soil loss by water erosion according to revised universal soil loss equation of Wischmeier and Smith (1978). R, K, SL, C, and P factor were determined for different land use types of districts and city of Bac Kan province. R factor varied from 570.0 to 918.6 MJ.mm/m2.h.year; K factor laid between 0.041-0.437 tons.h/MJ.mm; SL factor changed from 0 to 73.51; C factor was from 0.0001 to 1, and P factor varied from 0.1 to 1. of Eroded land in Bac Kan province occupied 341.321 ha, account for 74% of the surveyed area, in which: strongly eroded land: 76,662 ha, medium eroded land: 164,702 ha, and slightly eroded land: 99,957 ha. The area of eroded land of different land use types was: agricultural land – 9,435 ha, forest land – 291,032 ha, unused flat land – 2,394 ha, and unused mountains and hills – 38,460 ha.
