The current status of land consolidation and its impact on agricultural production of farmer household in Khoai Chau district, Hung Yen province

SUMMARY
After the stable and long-term land allocation to farmers under the Decree No.64/CP in 1994 with a view to ensure the equity among farmer households made land in Khoai Chau district become fragmented. The fragmentation of land after land redistribution has caused difficulties in managing and use of land resources.
From the actual requirement of agricultural production is to create producing areas of high quality commodities to meet the market demand and to improve the efficiency of land use, Khoai Chau district has implemented the policies of land consolidation since 2004 and received strong support from farmer households. After the implementation of land consolidation, the number of land parcel of land, plot size of each farmer household has changed in a positive way, contributing to improve the economic efficiency of land use and farmers’ life. The study results showed:
- Land consolidation has limited land fragmentation, reduced the number of parcel from 53.55% to 62.5%, compared to the previous time.
- Land consolidation contributes to the transportation system planning and infield irrigation network. In all communes, land transport increased over previous land consolidation up to 8.3% in Phung Hung commune and 35% in Dong Tao commune, met the demand of transportation by motor vehicles. Irrigated land increased of 2.8% in Phung Hung Commune up to 171.6% in Dong Tao Commune.
- Land consolidation helped entirely reducing complaints, disputes and encroachment of agricultural production land.
- After land consolidation, economic efficiency of land use per 1 hectare of agricultural production has been improved. Average value of production reached 75.26 million/ha (an increase of 55.78%), value added reached 47.25 million/ha (increased 78.27%), the production value/labor day reached 110,550 VND, an increase of 89.62% compared to the previous time in 2004.
