Summary
The relation between physical, chemical characteristics and clay mineral component of some degraded grey soil profiles in Vietnam
Profile samples of 4 typical grey degraded soils were analyzed. In the particle-size distribution the upper horizons were dominated by sand particles with the texture of sand, loamy or sandy loam. The clay content was below 10% in surfaced soil, but increase to level of 30 to 50% in the lower horizons. The chemical fertility of grey degraded soil was found to be very poor in organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and exchangeable “base”. In clay fraction, the group of kaolinite clay mineral was found to be predominant. Quartz was another dominant mineral. Results indicate intensive leaching and decomposition of clay particles in upper horizons of profiles.
