Summary
Impact of different farming systems on soil erosion and nutrient balance on sloping land at Lam Son, Luong Son, Hoa Binh
Research in 1996-2001.experiment was designed with 6 treatments and 3 replications, each plot with 112.5m2 was built by bricks with 2m3 concentrated tank and 1m3 overflow tank on bottom. 6 treatments: monocropping, natural fallow, improved fallow by Tephrosia candila (TC), alley crop hill rice with TC as hedgerow, alley crop hill rice with TC hedgerow without mulching TC’s biomass, hill rice plus mulching external TC’s biomass. Continuous monocropping with no fertilizers input in the sloping land is unsustainable due to high losses of plant nutrients and top soil due to erosion, crops yield rapidly declined and low by the time of cultivation. Mulching TC’s biomass reduced soil losses, nutrients losses, and increased hill rice yield because it intercepted rain detachment and recovered of organic matter, nutrient elements such as humus, N, P and K.
