SUMMARY

The study applied GIS technology to develop a land database (LDB) for provincial planning in Thai Binh province. The planning database on ArcGis software for Thai Binh province was completed with data comprising four layers (provincial land use status, which includes 10,331 land parcels; provincial land use orientation until 2030, covering 2,343 land parcels adjusted to meet land use targets; the current status of the urban system with 11 urban areas; and the orientation for urban system development until 2030, including 16 new urban areas), which were packaged in GDB format and presented in *.MXD format. From the national geographic LDB and the database built in Thai Binh province, a map of urban development in Thai Binh was extracted. A group of solutions were proposed to enhance the effectiveness of GIS applications in building the LDB for provincial planning, including completing and updating the GIS LDB, standardizing the LDB and integrating data, training personnel, and implementing solutions for database exploitation, operation, and management.
