Some characteristics of soil, climate, and quality of pepper in Phu Quoc island, Kien Giang province
Research was caried out in 2003 and 2004. Pepper has been planted in 8 communes in Phu Quoc that has typical temperature of the area is 27.2oC, annual rainfall is 3067mm. Pepper has been planted on 2 soil types such as grey soil and slight yellow soil developed on sandy stone, which are poor in nutrients. Topography is slight gradual with slope less than 8o and has elevation less than 30m. special technique is used to cultivate pepper that is different from other pepper areas of Vietnam, which is application od combination between organic and inorganic fertilizers. Quality of Phu Quoc pepper is special since it has high content of piperine 12-12.5% of total flavor substances. It has specific flavor created by monoterpene containing of 12 single substances. Content of this is 68.1-73.3% of total flavor substances.
