Summary
The soil fauna and its role in the soil nutrition cycle
There are 3 main fauna groups: macro fauna > 2mm, meso fauna 0.2-2mm and micro fauna 0.2mm. the activities of fauna are assessed by their abundance, biomass and nutrient transformation. They have trend to concentrate in the top soil and depend on the soil physical and chemical conditions. There are different important fauna grops: lumbricimorpha, hymenoptera, isopteran, chilopoda, colepptera, diplopoda, arachnida, collembola link to soil health. Role of fauna is organic matter decomposition and transformation into humus. Soil fauna can be accumulated N, P and K and turn back to the soil make is fertile. Soil fauna contribute 30% of total mineral N. Research in Cameroon 2002: 4,1% farmers believe plant, seasonal cropping and fauna activities are the good indicators of soil fertility, 38.9% farmers observed worm is the most indicator of soil quality and 3.2% said termite, ant are also good indicators.
