Summary
Evaluation of potential soil productivity in the Red River delta using crop growth modeling
Potential and water limited yields for rice, maize and soybean in Tam Duong, northern district and Thai Binh, coastal province were calculated with a simulation model WOFOST. In Tam Duong, potential yield was 7,5 Mg/ha for rice, 7,1 Mg/ha for maize and 3,8 Mg/ha for soybean can be achieved. In Thai Binh: potential yield was 8,5Mg/ha for rice, 7,2 Mg/ha for maize and 3,6 Mg/ha for soybean can be achieved. Yield gap between potential and water limited production was large on sandy loam soil, whereas yield gap due water limitation was small on loamy soils. The model is able to simulate potential sowing time to get highest yield. Model outputs are important data base for assisting resources evaluation before setting up land use planning for the modern approach of Multiple Goal Linear Program subjective to optimal land use options.
