Summary
Stability of paddy rice systems in the Red river delta and factors affecting its sustainable development
The combination of traditional experiences and the new technology is essential for the sustainable development of agriculture. The rice yields increase gradually from 29.4 quintal/ha/crop in 1985 to 54.3 quintal/ha in 1999. Purpose of land use is now changing very quickly in the trend of decreasing annual crops and paddy rice areas, and increasing specific use and resident areas. The areas of agriculture and paddy rice area estimated decreasing to 718,764 and 565,643 ha in the year 2010. Rice cultivation systems have affected to many properties of soil, i.e. the contents of humus, nitrogen and phosphorus improved, however the contents of potassium and pH decreased. The soil acidification and decrease of potassium and land use areas is identified as the causes affecting sustainable development of rice cultivation systems in the Red river delta in future.
