Deterioration risk of the uplands in Vietnam and research priorities for their management
Summary
In function of numerous adverse factors the uplands in Vietnam are being seriously deteriorated. While the agricultural use limits its impact in the surface layers, the non-agricultural activities have distributed the whole soil depth touching the profound weathering crusts. The restitution of their fertility should be done in an intime integration with the restoration of the soil and ecological environment in common. It implies strictly limiting the non-agricultural use, rapidly establishing a save coverage (above 50%), controlling erosion and leaching with integrated measures and producing a sufficient quantity of biomass in the spot. Detailly soil surveying, selecting appropriate cropping systems and fertilizer recommendation for each soil-ecological zones are prerequisite for continuum use of these lands. The sustainable agriculture should be supported by a meaningfull network of extention and credit agencies available for the farmer households.
