Effectiveness and sustainability of advantage upland programs
Objectives: to understand current situations of sustainable upland programs in northern mountainous region. To evaluate difficulties and opportunities to expand of these programs. Both qualitative (farmer approach) and quantitative (soil analysis) methods were used. Results: advantage upland programs with mainly SALT models applied in this region have given a good result to improve soil quality and economic effectiveness. However, there are a lot of difficulties caused to many farmers giving up their upland models. This is because many programs only concentrated on technology, but not on farmer’s needs. Also, there is lack of market aspect when development of program. In order to have a better result, upland programs need to consider both technology and socio-economic issue in designing stage and implementation.
