Summary

Leucaena leucocephala – a potential source for improvement of degraded soils and for forage

Results of 2 year filed experiments with Leucaenas and Leucaena KX2 hybrid: Leucaena KX2 hybrid promises good capacity for wide distribution due to completing vegetative propagation by cuttings. Rooting percentage gained was 60%. It has the best advantage in term of fresh yield production on acid soils. Leucaenas has capacity to soil reclamation better than Guinea grass ad Flemingia congesta. It increased the number of phosphorus – decomposed microorganisms in soil. Leucaena KX2 hybrid contains 21.80% – the highest crude protein (CP) comparable to parental trees – ~21%, in the mean while the NDF as well as ADF were lower than parental trees and other common forage.
