Summary
Primary study on soil fertility classification of the Me Kong delta after fertility capacity classification (PCC) on the basis of translating the soil map legend by FAO-UNESCO
If FCC map is available, it can be very valuable for defining fertility-management related land qualities. A problem is the general nature of the FCC classes usually only two or three severity levels can be separated by the FCC code. Provided sufficient information is available in the descriptive legend of FAO soil map, or implied by classification system, existing soil map can be classified into FCC maps. FAO soil map is able to interpret, using the legend description, phase information for each map unit. A general map of soil status, and soil status relationships can be created using FAO legend. Then FCC class map can be reclassified for any specific modifier or combination of these.
Translation of Mekong delta soil map legend in FAO system can be helpful in evaluation of soil fertility status and also for land use planning and fertility management strategies. The 1st translation can get some difficulties in recognition of characterization soil horizons, pedons and epipedons, and also due to lack of soil data, therefore further version must be continued ad updated.
