Summary

Land environment status by the year 2001

Total area is 33 million hectares, 14 soils groups, 31 soil units. Natural land and cultivated land per capital are low (0.4 and 0.1 hectare respectively). Land resource use is found unreasonable and inefficient. Land use ratio is low, (1.6). Advantages of forestry, perennial crop plantation and cattle raising in mountain and hill lands are not much mobilized. Shifting cultivation. Extensive cultivation and mono cultivation are still popular in mountain areas, especially in remote areas. Causes of land deterioration are resulted from natural and socio-economic condition and consequences of the war. Soil deterioration is at high level and large extent. Deteriorated area is 42.8% of total natural land. Several existing policies to combat land degradation are implementing in reclamation of waterlogged inundation and saline and acid sulphate soils and afforestation and forest management and rehabilitation of soil fertility in slopping barren land, in arable lands by use of appropriate integrated measures.
