Summary

Application of soil taxonomy into mountainous zone of Thai Nguyen province, Northern of Vietnam

Soils studied are strongly acidic, with low cation exchange capacity, very low content of organic carbon and nutrient associated with organic matter such as nitrogen. Kaolinite clay, associated with illite and vermiculite, predominates. Soil horizons were designated based on soil taxonomy. Soils studied were classified as Kanhaplustult ultisols, equivalent to haplic acrisols in FAO-UNESCO classification system. Limitations on the agriculture are attributed to the chemical and physical properties of ultisols. High clay content in a Bt horizon may have negative impacts on crop production because of lower infiltration, surface crusts and other properties that limit root penetration of seed germination.
